This week in the War on Workers: New York City hotel workers win personal panic buttons (Daily Kos)

_The war from above:_

As the video above shows, Pomona College has joined the war on workers, just
coincidentally asking workers for proof of their immigration status and firing
17, many of whom had worked at the college for years, in the middle of a union
organizing drive.

The Florida Senate, which has been actively engaged in the war on workers for
some time, is proposing to lower the minimum wage for tipped workers in some
restaurants. Florida’s minimum wage for tipped workers is currently above the
federal minimum.

And at the federal level, Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) has a bill to reduce the types
of high-tech jobs that qualify for overtime. Because what we need is fewer
people who are eligible for overtime pay for extra hours worked.

_Fighting back_:

Unionized hotel workers at many of New York City’s large hotels have a new
contract that not only gives them raises but personal panic buttons in case
they encounter danger while alone in hotel rooms. Workers at an Anchorage,
Alaska hotel won a court battle with a management company trying to break the
union.

Trader Joe’s has signed the Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ Fair Food code.
